Preparing For Your In Home Newborn Photography Session | Seattle Newborn Photography

So you booked your in home newborn session. Now what? You may be wondering how to prepare.

First things first. You just had a baby. if this is your first or your fourth your whole world was just rocked. You are sleep deprived and probably a little overwhelmed. Last thing I want is for you to be stressed out about your newborn session.

My tips for preparation are simple.

  1. Plan to wear comfortable clothing in neutral tones. You want these images to be timeless and I find that neutral tones are best for that. Also, I don’t want you to be even the slightest bit uncomfortable. Wear what feels comfortable and true to your style.

  2. If it is winter, turn your thermostat up to about 70. It is nice to have a warm house so I can take photos of the baby when the baby is unwrapped and still manage to keep baby cozy.

  3. Photography time is not a time to have guests over. Grandparents or special out of town guests who are staying with you… sure. But it’s best not to have other friends and family stop by during out shoot. I want to be in out quickly so that you can get back to baby cuddles and guests tend to distract the whole fam.

  4. Don’t clean the house. Shocked to hear that one? Well I stand by it. You just had a baby. Last thing you need to be doing is cleaning. I will tidy up the areas I am going to photograph you and your baby in as I go.

  5. If there are siblings involved, let them know I am coming. Tell them a friend is coming to take some photos. If we had a maternity session together remind them of our time spent and maybe even show them the photos as a reminder. It’s best not to surprise them.

  6. Gather any wraps, blankets, or other clothing you think baby may need before I arrive. This will help me work a bit more efficiently.

Lifestyle Newborn Photography is a laid back and beautiful way to capture this very special time for your family. I promise to make the experience fun and meaningful. I can’t wait to capture you and yours!

The Benefits of In Home Newborn Photography | Seattle Newborn Photographer

Why in home newborn photography?

It’s no secret that I love in home sessions! Staying in home for your newborn (or family!) session is intimate, authentic and safe. I love my outdoor sessions, but there’s always something a little extra special about a family allowing me into their space to capture their life.

In home photography means you don’t have to pack anything or go anywhere.

This is especially beneficial when you’ve just brought home a new baby because odds are, you’re exhausted and the idea of packing up the van to go get photos done sounds like a nightmare… am I right?

In home newborn and family sessions captures your life.

In home sessions are great for capturing more than just your family, love and connection. They also document your home! It’s where you and your family live and grow together and it’s an important piece to document, especially when bringing home a new little family member.

Most importantly, in home newborn sessions are safe.

Newborns have an incredibly sensitive immune system and exposing them to germs outside the home can be risky. And if you’re introducing your new baby to siblings, it’s easier to control those interactions in the comfort of your own home.

I met this sweet family while they were pregnant when I did their maternity photographs. Beautiful doesn't even begin to describe this little family. There little man fits right in and is so sweet. He was awake during his whole session but so peaceful the whole time. Your baby is perfect just as he or she is. I don't expect him to sleep or lie still. If he needs to be hold, we hold him. If he needs to eat, we feed him. Babies lead my sessions and I think it works out wonderfully. It has been a pleasure getting to know this family and I wish them all the best on this journey we call parenting.

This is going to be a first for me. I have never only shared black and white images but for some reason this session speaks louder to me in black and white. While I give every family both color and black and white versions of their images, sometimes the black and white hold more emotion. Being a newborn photographer in Seattle, I have to be able to embrace low and moody light. I have found that this type of light really adds to the deep emotion that is present during the newborn  stage in a family's life. There are so many emotions  present when you have a newborn at home. There is excitement and promise but there is also exhaustion and even a bit of sadness. What I want the families who choose me to photograph them to remember is that it is all beautiful in all of its imperfections. I want them to remember what it felt like to hold that tiny baby in their arms and nuzzle into their soft head. I want them to be reminded of a time that they will never be able to get back however life changing it was. A time that will all seem like a dream in a few years time. I want them to look at their images and feel all of the emotions that they felt when they had their newborn in their arms whether they were good or bad. Life is fleeting and  and you will never understand just how fast everything goes until you have a child.

Baby Lorna, you are so loved.

This was one of those sessions... I walked in, I could feel their peaceful energy immediately.  We spent about an hour and a half together and I pretty much fell in love with them, all three of them.   I think Annie Leibovitz put it perfectly when she said "A thing you see in my pictures is that I was not afraid to fall in love with these people."  Exactly, Annie.  I often feel like I have fallen in love with the families who choose me to capture them.  Newborn photography, and even more specifically lifestyle newborn photography, requires you to come into these peoples lives during such a vulnerable time, it requires you to open your heart to them, to make yourself available so that you may capture this raw and beautiful time in their lives.  I only hope I can do these families an ounce of justice.  Thank you, for choosing me.  It was a pleasure!
